When designers at Big Table Studio moved into St. Paul’s Jax Building in 2009, they had few visitors and even less visibility. But seven months ago, this creative collective relocated to a bright and airy studio in the Lawson Commons, a large, high-visibility space adjacent to the Amsterdam Bar & Hall and Eclipse Records.
They’re getting a bit more attention these days. One reason: their intimate relationship with ARTCRANK. Read their story here.

Porn Star Prom Date of the Day: Like a lot of teenagers, Mike Stone just wants to spend his senior prom with a bunch of his friends. And a porn star.
A month ago, Stone turned to Twitter in his quest to land an adult actress as his date to the dance, and after over 600 tweets, he may have finally found the lucky lady: Megan Piper.
“If you can get me there, then yes,” the porn starlet tweeted.
Flying Piper from L.A. to Oakdale, MN isn’t exactly in Stone’s 18-year-old budget, and he hasn’t told his parents about his bold scheme, so he’s decided to raise the funds via Twitter, with a little help from his new prom date.
“I’d love to go to prom with @madmike42948 and I think you all should help him raise funds to get me there,” Piper told her Twitter followers.
Whether he succeeds or not, Stone’s scheme has already earned him a sufficient measure of respect from his friends.
“I was actually thanking people who are cheering me on and telling me to keep on with it. They keep telling me I’m a legend and a hero,” he told The Daily Dot.

Even though the Vikings lost their shot at competing in Super Bowl XLVI long ago, many eager football fans are still giddy with excitement for the big game on Sunday. The Patriots and Giants go head-to-head in what perhaps is the only true American holiday.
Instead of being forced to spend all day with your kooky aunt Pauline, you get to kick back and relax with friends enjoying adult beverages aplenty, and a disproportionately high volume of salty, greasy, delicious snacks.
While many people host at home Super Bowl parties, the Twin Cities is rife with entertainment options, big screens, and food/drink specials. Here’s METRO’s round up on where to go to watch the big game.
Alary’s Bar. St. Paul’s number one sports bar isn’t kidding around. With 30 50-inch plasma TVs, you’ll see every touchdown in high-def, from all directions. And even if the game turns out to be a snoozer ther are still darts, pool tables, and the largest selection of tap beer in Downtown St. Paul. Alary’s is St. Paul’s Super Bowl solution. Alary’s Bar, 139 East 7th St., St. Paul, alarys.com
Cafeteria’s Big Gay Super Bowl Party. Bigger and gayer than ever, the Uptown Cafeteria and Support Group hosts a Super Bowl Party like nothing you’ve ever been to before. With dueling drag queens, touchdown jello shots, an all-day happy hour, and prizes (think: a life size wall graphic of Tom Brady and Eli Manning), you’ll be at the most fab party in Uptown. Uptown Cafeteria and Support Group, 3001 Hennepin Ave. S., Mpls., uptowncafeteria.com
Hubert’s Sports Bar & Grill. Keep it simple: watch the game at a sports bar. With no cover, $1 Bud Lights and $2 tacos your stomach and bank account will be happy. Enjoy shuffleboard, beer pong, darts, and the chance to win awesome prizes. Oh yeah, and watch the game with alongside your sports bar brethren. Hubert’s Sports Bar & Grill, 601 Chicago Avenue, Mpls., hubertsmpls.com
Liquor Lyles. If a dive bar is more your speed, hit up Liquor Lyles annual Super Bowl Bash. With food and drink specials (over 40 beers on tap!), the game will play on flat screens as well as two giant projection screens. Liquor Lyle’s Lounge, 2021 Hennepin Avenue, Mpls., lylesliquor.com
Nomad World Pub Super Bowl XLVI. Are you the wandering, nomadic type? Then wander on over to Nomad World Pub’s Super Bowl party for tailgating, and enjoy good eats, and your favorite craft and import beers. Extra incentive: you might even have a chance to win something. Nomad World Pub, 501 Cedar Ave., Mpls., nomadpub.com
Loring Kitchen & Bar (Anti-Super Bowl). Maybe you don’t care about football. Maybe you’re boycotting the Super Bowl until the Vikings finally pull their shit together and actually make it to the big game (note: holding your breath for such an occurrence is not recommended) Whatever your reason for being anti-Super Bowl, there’s a place for you. The Loring Kitchen & Bar is happy to be your escape. Totally Super Bowl-free, the only thing that will be playing on their big screens are classic movies. Loring Kitchen & Bar, 1359 Willow St., Mpls., loringkitchen.com

the651ery:

The holidays are full of stories of people taking time from their day to help others - this one is no different. My Saturday started in Rice Park today to take a couple pictures (Rice Park is even cooler in the winter – no pun intended) and I noticed a group of people surrounding a handful of winter coats on the benches toward the north end of the park. My initial goal of taking some pictures for my blog (albeit low quality cell phone pictures) went by the wayside and I decided to walk over and see what was going on.
I met Matt who explained that he and his partner represented a group that spends their Saturdays at Rice Park from 10am-11:30am handing out cookies and hot chocolate, jackets and other necessities. Their goal was to offer an easy way for people that needed some help staying warm (which is a wonderful thing). I was lucky enough to catch them right before they left at 11:30, and they were in the company of a half dozen people looking for help.
I asked if they took donations at the Rice Park site. Matt said that they hadn’t in the past, but would be willing to take them if people brought things by. (If you do bring anything, please make sure it is in good, usable condition). He mentioned men, women and children’s winter items along with various hygienic products.
This is a wonderful example of a community taking care of others and I can’t applaud them enough.

Meet Steve
mspmag:
Meet Steve Morgan. He works at Willie’s American Guitars in St. Paul and he’s been working with guitars since he was 16 years old. You can find him there or teaching guitar at St. Thomas.
We included him in our “Where to Fix Your Best Stuff” feature along with a cobbler in the skyways, a restorer who helps nurse works of art back to health for various museums, and a magical makeover for this grandma chair.
